Youthful Lady Cobras look for experience

BY BRADLEY CROW
The Wesson Lady Cobras enter the 2007-2008 season with loads of untapped potential and a head coach that is cautiously optimistic that experience will yield success on the hardwood for Wesson.
“This group could be a pleasant surprise this year,” commented Lady Cobra head coach Hugh Webb.  “I feel this group of girls will only get better as the season goes on and this leads me to belive that we could be a surprise.”
The roster is void of any seniors and the squad only has one junior in Kelly Westmoreland.  Webb is not worried however as he smiles when he mentions his talented group of sophomores and freshmen.  Anne Shelby Davis, Macie Case, Leah Greer and Daniel Tadlock bring big game experience to the Lady Cobras.  Ansley Schimmel, Kimmie Kolpek and Lacrissa Harris round out the talented sophomores.  The freshmen group is loaded with young talent and comes off a very successful junior high career.  They are Marian Allen, Summer Rials, Shanequa Brown, Brittany Twiner, and Shauntey Walker.
“We had a great summer,” explained Webb.  “We played 35 games and got better each time.  They are only gonna grow and get better with each game.”  The Lady Cobras pre-season was labeled as a success by Webb.  They lost to Hillcrest in the final minute and led Copiah by 6 with two minutes remaining before bowing out with a loss.  Webb said the group makes sophomore mistakes but puts a premium on each mistake as more experience.  “When these girls become juniors and seniors, Wesson is gonna see the best basketball that they have seen in quite a while.”
The Cobras, who tallied a 13-14 worksheet last year, begin play this Saturday at 6:00 against the Dexter Bulldogs.  Webb asks that the community come out and support these young ladies.
