Cobra soccer teams split with opponents
The Brookhaven Hansel King Sportsplex was host to two hard fought battles between the Wesson Cobras and the Piney Woods Tornadoes. After the Friday night contests, each ended up with a win to add to their district record.
Piney Woods scored early in the first half and it seemed the skilled ball handling of the Tornadoes would dominate throughout the evening. However, late in the first half, the Cobras responded when Brandon Burch passed the ball to Chris Fink who launched it in the goal. A scoreless second half forced an overtime match for the two teams. Piney Woods scored late in the overtime period on an unusual blocked goalie punt that sealed the 2-1 victory for the Tornados.
In game two action, the Wesson Cobras came on strong and posted a 3-1 win. The Cobras seemed to have more determination and were a dominating force on the field. The Piney Woods Tornadoes had trouble getting within scoring range thanks to the strong defensive efforts of Blake Brown, Sid Cawthorn, Justin Goodman, and Alan Stegall.
Piney Woods once again came out with an early lead and scored quickly against the Cobras. However, during the last few minutes of the first half, seventh grader Brandon Nettles made a well executed pass that allowed Chris Fink to score and tie the game 1-1.
During the second half of the game, the Cobras were unstoppable. The offense played with precision and unity while the defense and midfield forced the Tornadoes back when they tried to advance. Chris Fink was able to score two more times against the Tornadoes with the assistance of Brandon Nettles and Brandon Burch. Coach Gunter commented after the game “These boys played a fantastic game, I couldn’t be more proud.” The Cobras record is 2-4, 1-1. After a week off the Cobras boys’ & girls’ teams will return to action in an away game against Natchez Cathedral.
