CA basketball team both 1-2 on week
BY BRO. JAMES BEASLEYThe Brookhaven Academy Cougars outscored Copiah Academy 21-8 in the second period and went on to pound the Colonels 71-42 in Brookhaven last week.
CA trailed by only five, 19-14, in the first quarter, but fell behind 40-22 after Brookhaven’s second-quarter spurt. The Cougars led 56-35 in the third period and pulled away in the final eight minutes for the easy win.
Only four Colonels scored, but three of them were in double figures, led by Hunter Greer with 13 and followed by Scotty Reese with 12. Clay Price added 10 points, while Reece Hankins was close behind with 9 points.
Copiah 70, PCS 49
After compiling a 4-12 record over the first half of the season, the Copiah Academy Colonels took out their frustrations on Prentiss Christian by overwhelming the Saints 70-49 in Gallman last week.
Every combination of players Coach Hoyte Carothers inserted performed well as CA jumped out to a 16-6 first quarter lead. The Colonels increased their margin to 36-20 by halftime and led by nearly thirty after three quarters of play as they coasted to victory.
Four Copiah players were in double figures, led by Clay Price with six 3-pointers and 18 points, followed by Hunter Greer with 16 points. Others in double digits were Owen Jones and Scotty Reese with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Additional CA totals included Adam Ganucheau with 4 points, followed by four players, each with 2 points: Matthew Wright, Brandon Smith, Russ Singleton, and Russell Hood.
Leake 78, Copiah 57
The Copiah Academy Colonels hung tough for nearly three quarters before the Leake Academy Rebels pulled away in the final 10 minutes for a 78-57 victory in Gallman last Saturday.
Copiah, now 5-13, was led by Hunter Greer with 22 points, followed by Clay Price with 14 points. Other Copiah totals included Reece Hankins with 6 points, Scotty Reese with 5 points, Owen Jones and Russ Singleton with 3 points each, and Matthew Wright and Russell Hood with 2 points apiece.

Brookhaven 51, Copiah 30
The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars outscored Copiah Academy 20-6 in the second period and went on to whip the Lady Colonels 51-30 in Brookhaven last week.
Brookhaven led by only six, 12-6, after the first quarter, but jumped in front 32-12 at the half and maintained that margin the rest of the way.
CA scorers included Amanda Pyron with 8 points, Ashley Baham with 6 points, Emily Fahner and Lori Baham with 5 points each, and Madelon Cline with 3 points.
Copiah 67, PCS 32
The Copiah Academy Lady Colonels hit eleven 3-pointers enroute to a 67-32 massacre of the Prentiss Christian Lady Saints in Gallman last week.
CA led 21-3 after one period, 37-10 at the half, and 50-23 in the third quarter. The Lady Colonels then added four more treys in the final eight minutes to pad the lead.
Ashley Baham led the winners with 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Others in double figures were Emily Fahner with 13 points, Madelon Cline with 11 points including a trio of 3-pointers, and Amanda Pyron with 10 points. Additional Copiah totals included Lori Baham with 9 points, Caroline Beach with 5 points, and Katie Vanlandingham with 2 points.
Leake 73, Copiah 35
The undefeated Leake Academy Lady Rebels, 25-0, kept their perfect record intact as they demolished the Copiah Academy Lady Colonels 73-35 in Gallman last Saturday.
Rachel Strait led CA with 9 points. Other Lady Colonels on the scoreboard included Emily Fahner and Brooke Wilson with 5 points each; Madelon Cline, Ashley Baham, and Katie Vanlandingham with 4 points apiece; and Caroline Beach and Lori Baham with 2 points each. Copiah’s record now stands at 14-9.
