BY JAMES BEASLEY
Clay Price scored 29 points and Copiah Academy outscored the Manchester Academy Mavericks 23-2 in the fourth quarter as the Colonels won 72-54 in Yazoo City last week.
CA led 18-13 after one period, but fell behind 41-31 after being outscored 28-13 in the second quarter. The Colonels still trailed by three, 52-49, after three quarters, but overtook Manchester by virtue of their big fourth-quarter run.
In addition to Price, Scotty Reese was also in double figures with 19 points. Other scorers included Reece Hankins with 9 points, Hunter Greer with 6 points, Ben Boone with 5 points, and Owen Jones with 4 points.
Copiah 38, Simpson 35
Copiah head coach Dee Granger’s strategy was for her Lady Colonels to control the tempo of the game, and it worked to perfection as they edged the Simpson Academy Lady Cougars 38-35 in Mendenhall last week.
CA led 10-8 after one period, 21-17 at the half, and 30-25 after three quarters. That was just enough as Simpson outscored the Colonels 10-8 in the final eight minutes, but fell short.
Copiah’s Amanda Pyron led all scorers with 13 points. Other CA scorers included Ashley Baham with 8 points, Madelon Cline and Caroline Beach with 6 points each, Emily Fahner with 3 points, and Rachel Strait with 2 points.
