Twyner chosen Hazlehurst school superintendent

The Hazlehurst School District  Board of Trustees voted 3-2 to hire Karl Twyner as superintendent during last Wednesday evening’s special meeting.

The board voted to offer Twyner a two year contract at a salary of $85,000, provided that he meet state standards and be bonded through the district’s bonding agency Zurich.

The vote was split 3-2, with board members David Huntington and Dr. Bettie McDaniel voting against the hire. Rev. Wyatt Lewis, Rev. Martin Washington, and Jessie Jones voted in favor of hiring Twyner.

Prior to the vote to hire Twyner, a motion was made to hire Dr. Ray Strebeck as interim superintedent. The motion failed to pass with the same split, with Huntington and McDaniel voting in favor of hiring Strebeck, and Jones, Washington, and Lewis voting against it.

The regular meeting of the Hazlehurst School Board is held on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.


Citizens in the Hazlehurst district living outside the city limits are reminded that an election for school board member will be held on Saturday, March 1. Five candidates will be on the ballot. For more information contact the school district office.

Candidates are reminded of the Courier’s policy on political announcements. No candidate announcements will run on the front page of the paper the issue immediately before the election. Candidates who wish to run a political announcement should contact the Courier for more information. The deadline is at noon on Monday for publication on Wednesday.
