The Copiah Academy Colonels continued the most successful soccer season in school history by blasting the Parklane Academy Pioneers 11-0 last week in Gallman.

Richard Henley put Copiah in front with his first goal 7 minutes into the contest.  Two minutes later, he scored again, upping the Colonels’ lead to 2-0. Nathan Madison, oldest son of head coach Jamie Madison, scored off an assist by Lee Brown in the 27th minute to make the score 3-0. Three minutes later, Brown scored, giving CA a 4-0 lead at the half.

The Colonels put the game totally out of reach in the second half, scoring 7 goals in the final 23 minutes.  Included were goals by Gary Strong, Josh Scruggs, Alex Guess, Daniel Sims, and Nathan Madison, along with a pair of goals by Christopher Bagley.

Last Wednesday, Copiah clinched the South State title by beating Chamberlain Hunt 5-3 in a make-up game at Gallman. Scotty Reese scored first at the 12:44 mark, and Richard Henley followed with a hat trick, scoring at the 19:03 mark, on a penalty kick at 26:30, and also in the 31st minute. CA led 4-1 at the half.

Alex Guess got the Colonels’ final goal at the 25-minute mark in the second half. Behailu Streit scored all 3 of the Cadets’ goals, two of them in the final 5 minutes.

Copiah now has a 15-1 mark overall, including 11-1 in district play. Both are the best records in school history. In fact, the Colonels haven’t lost a regular season game at home in over two years, according to head coach Jamie Madison.

CA hosts the University Christian Flames in the first round of the MPSA AA playoffs on Monday, February 11. The Colonels will host Mount Salus this Thursday, February 14, at 3:00. The winner will play for the state championship on Saturday at a site to be determined.

 

COPIAH ROUNDBALLERS HEAD TO SOUTH STATE AA

The Columbia Academy Lady Cougars outscored Copiah Academy 17-8 in the final period and went on to beat the Lady Colonels 48-37 at the District 4-AA Tournament in Brookhaven last week.

Ashley Baham led CA with 13 points, followed closely by Fahner with 12 points. Other Copiah scorers included Cline with 5 points, Amanda Pyron with 3 points, and Teasley and Beach with 2 points apiece.

Copiah 51, Simpson 42

Copiah Academy sank 9 of 10 free throws in the final three minutes of the game as the Lady Colonels emerged with a 51-42 win over the Simpson Academy Lady Cougars at the District 4-AA Tournament last Saturday. The victory earned 3rd-place for CA, which will move on to face ACCS at the South State Tournament in Columbia on Tuesday, February 12, at 6:30 PM.

Cline led the winners with 17 points, followed by Fahner with 11 points. Other CA totals included Beach and Strait with 6 points each, Amanda Pyron with 5 points, Ashley Baham with 4 points, and Teasley with 2 points.

Copiah 77,

Prentiss Christian 36

Facing a must-win situation, the Copiah Academy Colonels pounded the Prentiss Christian Saints 77-36 in the opening night of the District 4-AA Tournament at Brookhaven Academy last week.

Senior Hunter Greer led the way with 21 points, 19 of them in the first half as CA forged ahead 50-24. The Colonels increased their lead to 64-32 by the end of the third period as they coasted to the easy victory.

Four Copiah players were in double figures, led by Clay Price with 24 points and Greer with 21. Others included Adam Ganucheau with 12 points, all in the final quarter, and Reece Hankins with 10 points. 

Brookhaven 71, Copiah 38

Copiah Academy, with 3 players out due to the flu, fell victim to the host Brookhaven Academy Cougars 71-38 at the District 4-AA Tournament last week. Owen Jones, Adam Ganucheau, and Russell Hood were all missing in action, while teammate Russ Singleton remained sidelined with a broken foot. Scotty Reese led CA with 14 points. Clay Price was also in double figures with 11 points. Other totals included Hunter Greer and Reece Hankins with 5 points each, and Matthew Wright with 3 points.

Simpson 74, Copiah 64

The Simpson Academy Cougars came from behind in the final period, outscoring Copiah Academy 24-9, to beat the Colonels 74-64 in the consolation game of the District 4-AA Tournament at Brookhaven last Saturday. Despite the loss, CA faced Oak Forest at 7:45 PM Tuesday, February 12, in the South State Tournament at Columbia Academy.
