Bobby Joe Matthews

Bobby Joe Matthews, 73, of Hazlehurst, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at his home.

Services were held Friday, Feb. 15 from Stringer Family Funeral Home in Hazlehurst. Interment will follow at the Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Matthews was born January 16, 1935, to Dan and Bessie Williams Matthews in Copiah County.  He was baptized at the age of 12 at Harmony Baptist Church.  Bobby Joe graduated from Crystal Springs High School in 1953 and soon after  began serving his country in the U. S. Army in San Antonio, Texas, as a member or the Military Police.  After his military service he became a computer technician with IBM in the Baton Rouge area for several years.  In 1973 he purchased Southwest Auto and Fleet Service in Jackson, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1994.  He moved to Ventress, LA and enjoyed a quiet, peaceful retirement on False River until he moved back to Copiah County in 2005.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, D. C., Jim, Billy and Odell Matthews.

 Survivors include: his wife, Sandra; daughters, Heather and Ashley Matthews of Ventress, LA; stepson, Scott Deaton (Jennifer) and their children Brooke and Nathan of Crystal Springs; sisters, Marcelle Berch of Crystal Springs and Christine Burkett (Burnell) of Harrisville; and his faithful and loving Basset Hound, Bullit.
