Cobras pick up two district wins

The Wesson Cobras (9-5) find themselves in the thick of the Division 6-2A championship race after two victories over district rival McLaurin in two contests that came down to the wire.

Wesson 4, McLaurin 2

Tuesday evening saw late inning heroics by freshman Kyle Cross, who in the top of the 7th inning pushed the go ahead run across the plate to break a 2-2 tie with a double.  Cross would eventually score on a throwing error and the Cobras walk away from Star, MS with a 4-2 victory.

Another solid pitching performance by senior flame thrower Jonathan Grace (5-3) gave him his fifth victory of the season.  The Cobras only managed 5 hits with two coming from Cross and outfielder Sid Cawthorn.  Both players managed a single and double on the evening.  Grace singled to help out his own cause.

Wesson 8, McLaurin 6

The Cobras carried the momentum of Tuesday night’s game into Friday evenings contest with Grace sealing the victory with a three strikeout 7th inning performance in relief of starter Caleb Broome.

Grace’s save became his second of the year with him mowing down the heart of the Tigers order in the final frame of the contest.  Broome (2-2) picked up his second win of the year to pull his record even.

Grace’s big game did not end with the save however, as he drilled a grand slam homerun in the bottom of the second inning to put the Cobras ahead 4-3 after trailing the Tigers 3-0 out of the gate.

After the Tigers cut the Cobras lead to 7-6 in the top of the seventh, second baseman Matt P. Smith drilled a solo shot for some insurance for the Cobras.  The Cobras as a team hit exceptionally well as a unit banging out 11 hits on the evening.

Matt P. Smith added two singles to his homer while Grace added a single to his homer.  DH Cody Crestman had a double and single while Cross, outfielder Alan Stegall, Broome, and outfielder Chris Fink each added singles.

Broome turned in a nice worksheet in the win picking up 7 strikeouts and allowing only four hits in the victory

“We had some bats wake up tonight,” stated Cobra head coach Hugh Knight.  “I am proud of what we did this week and I hope it carries over into next week’s series with St. Andrews.”  The Cobras play the Saints at home Tuesday evening and then go on the road to visit St. Andrews Friday.

Wesson 14, West Lincoln 12

The Cobras picked up the victory over the 1A Bears at home.  Matt P. Smith picked up the win while Grace notched another save.

Brookhaven 10, Wesson 0

The Cobras got blasted by the 4A Panthers on a day that the Cobras made several errors that put the game away early.  Broome picked up the loss for the Cobras.
