City hires new fire chief

The Hazlehurst Board of Aldermen hired Gabriel Harvey as city fire chief during the regular monthly session. Harvey will take up the new post on June 1.

The board also hired Lee Bradford and Devin Gary as full time fire fighters. Aric Mueller was moved from full time to part time fire fighter.

Garage door openers will be installed at the downtown fire station similar to the ones at the north station. This will help with heating costs as well as security if the fire fighters can close the bay doors behind them when they go on a call, explained Seth Morris. The installation will cost about $2800.

In other business, Mayor Henry Banks agreed to take a pay cut, bringing his salary to $1130 per month. As part of the same action the board increased the salary of Frank Pickering by $130, with Pickering abstaining. Pickering serves as head of the street department as well as alderman.

After discussion in executive session the board voted several promotions in the police department including Arthur Harris to patrol sergeant, Frank Braxton to lieutenant, and Chris Granger to sergeant.

An item for Crime Stoppers was taken off the claims.

No public comment was heard during the cleanup hearing on the property behind the cleaners. The owners will be given notice that the property must be cleaned up or the city will do it and charge the cost back to them on their taxes.

Paul and Pegi Brooks explained a problem they are having with the city sewer backing up into their basement during heavy rains. The aldermen took the matter under advisement.

The city intends to apply for grants for sidewalks and lights at the ballpark. Alderman Frank Jones asked that the city seek grant funds to put teenagers to work during the summer break.

A church youth group has volunteered to clean up fire hydrants around the city. The city will provide the paint.

Lifeguard training was set to begin Monday. A list of lifeguards for the summer was approved. Repairs were ongoing at the pool, which officials hoped would be complete in time for lifeguard training to begin.

A beer permit was approved for Sidetracks 2.

The Hazlehurst aldermen regularly meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.
