State names new conservator

Stanley Blackmon will take over as conservator of the Hazlehurst City School District on July 1, according to action taken Friday by the State Board of Education.

Blackmon comes to Hazlehurst after retiring as principal of Lanier High School, a position he has held since 2004. He has a reputation as a troubleshooter, having led Lanier from Level 1 (low performing) status before his principalship began in 2003 to Level 3 (successful) last year.

Joe Haynes, who has served as interim conservator since the state takeover of the school district on May 20, is expected to stay in the district part-time to assist Blackmon.

The conservator will hold a meeting on Monday, June 30, at 10 a.m. in the board room for the dispatch of business. The meeting will be open to the public.
