The Wesson 12 year old All-Stars won the District 6 North Sub-District Tournament Monday night in Natchez by defeating the host team 8-2 and capping off an undefeated tournament sweep.
Wesson hurler Landon Nettles threw his second gem of the tournament for Wesson, this time a two-hitter, after one-hitting the Lincoln County squad just four days earlier. Nettles struck out 12 and walked 6 in the contest.
Leading the way for Wesson offensively was centerfielder Les Parker who put the game away in the 5th inning with a 3-run triple to the wall. Parker also singled for his second hit. Landon Nettles doubled while Bailey Warren, Austin Crow, and Brandon Nettles singled. The Wesson squad put 5 runs on the board in the first inning and led the whole way. Taking the loss on the mound for Natchez was Brandon Ross who couldn’t get out of the first inning with command problems.
“The goal for this bunch since they were eight years old was to make it to the state tournament,” explained head coach Bradley Crow. “This group has finally realized that dream this year and I can’t think of a group who deserves it more. I am proud of what they have accomplished as a team.”
Wesson was trailing by one run in the bottom of the sixth Friday evening to the host team Natchez in the finals of the winner’s bracket 4-3. That all changed when a Trey Chassion hit, Blake Burns walk, and Ethan Harris hit loaded the bases with two outs. With two strikes on him, first baseman Warren then shut the lights off with a walk-off grand slam to pull off the Wesson win 7-4.
Parker pitched the complete game for Wesson picking up the win.
Wesson rode the arm of Nettles as he dusted off Lincoln County to the tune of 2-0. Nettles would help his cause with a home run in the 5th inning. Harris would steal home for the only other run of the contest.
Wesson plays the winner of the Summit-Franklin County winner out of the south Thursday at the south site to be announced. Wesson will play the second game of the best of three series at home Saturday at 6:00 p.m. A coin flip will decide the third site if necessary. Win or lose, Wesson has a date at the state tournament beginning July 12th in Magee.
