After a long week of tournament basketball, two local teams finished victorious in their respective districts.
The Hazlehurst Indians swept through the Region 6-3A tourney at Crystal Springs, finishing Friday with a 87-77 win over no. 1 seed Raymond.
The Indians jumped to a 10 point lead after one quarter at 25-15. The two teams battled even in the second, allowing Hazlehurst to lead 42-32 at the half. In the third period, Raymond inched back, outscoring the Indians 25-20. The lead at the start of the fourth quarter was five, at 62-57. The Indians returned the favor, however, in the final period, and won the championship game by ten points.
Fred Fuller led all scorers with 24, followed by Gabriel Gray with 22 and Eric Walker with 21–all for the Indians.
Hazlehurst hosts Region 8’s number 4 seed West Marion on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Lady Indians, who placed third in the tournament, will play at Columbia tonight at 7 p.m.
The Wesson Lady Cobras also took the local gold home with a 48-44 win over Hinds AHS in the 6-2A tournament.
Wesson clinged to a 24-22 lead at the half, then held on as the Lady War Dawgs battled the Lady Cobras tooth-and-nail the rest of the way.
Ann Shelby Davis notched 15 for Wesson, and Macie Case (11) and Ansley Schimmel (10) also hit for double figures.
The Lady Cobras host Richton, the no. 4 team from District 8, at 7 p.m. tonight.
