The Wesson Lady Cobras (26-5) used a 25 point first quarter to break the press and break the hearts of the Richton Lady Rebels 70-54 and send them packing before a capacity home crowd Monday evening in Wesson.
Ann Shelby Davis led Wesson with 27 points while post player Shauntay Walker delivered 17 rebounds in giving Wesson the convincing win in the South State Class 2A opening round playoff victory.
“They lived and died by the press all year,” stated Wesson head coach Hugh Webb on the Lady Rebels pressure. “We got layup after layup early on and that was the difference for our girls tonight.”
Davis had 5 rebounds and 3 assists to go along with her 27 point effort while Walker added 10 points in route to her double-double performance. Fiesty defensive presence Christina Fink added 5 rebounds and 5 huge steals for the Lady Cobras to go with 6 points. Sharpshooters Macie Case and Ansley Schimmel bagged 13 and 11 points respectively in the complete team effort by the Lady Cobras.
Richton got seven 3-pointers from Serinity Robins for 21 total points on the evening while Keana Robins added 15 in the loss.
The Lady Cobras travel to Scott Central Thursday evening to face the Newton Lady Tigers at 8:30 p.m.
“Newton finished #3 in their district,” stated Webb. “No doubt though that they play in one of the toughest districts in the state.”
