Child dies in house fire in Georgetown
An eight-year-old boy died of injuries sustained in a house fire in Georgetown Saturday morning. Emergency responders received the 911 call at 9:18 a.m.
Robbie Melton died on the way to the hospital after the fire at 1034 Mary Street. The boy’s grandmother and younger sister sustained injuries and were flown to the burn center in Georgia for treatment.
Robbie’s father had already left for work that morning, leaving the sleeping children in the care of their grandmother, according to Alan Faler, Georgetown Fire Chief.
The bedroom was gutted by fire, with smoke damage throughout the rest of the house, leaving it uninhabitable for now, Faler reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Visitation for Robbie Melton will be from 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday at the Pentecostal Church in Georgetown. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday morning, also at the Pentecostal Church.
Funds have been set up at Copiah, Regions, and Trustmark Banks to assist the family.
