Body found in Pearl River positively identified

The body found floating the Pearl River near Georgetown last week has been positively identified as a missing Jackson man, according to Copiah County Coroner Ellis Stuart.

Sherrell Hogan, 26, was reported missing by his family to Jackson Police Department on March 6, 2009. Hogan was positively identified using DNA, Stuart reported Wednesday morning.

Hogan apparently suffered a gunshot wound to the chest before his body ended up in the river, and his death is being investigated as a homicide.

Law enforcement officials do not believe he was murdered in Copiah County, Stuart explained, so Jackson Police Department will lead the homicide investigation as they were already working a missing persons case on Hogan.
