Colonels drop Saints, lead AA semis 1-0
Copiah Academy took another step towards possible destiny Monday night, as the Colonel baseball team, 25-2, rocked the visiting Trinity Saints 8-3 in Gallman in the first game of the south AA semi-finals.
The Colonels jumped on the Saints 2-0 in the first inning when Scotty Reese and Ben Boone scored on a two-out bloop single by Bryce Guess.
In the third, Trinity committed several errors that led to Copiah plating a total of 4 runs, enabling a 6-0 lead for the home team.
Trinity scored a run in the top of the fifth via a solo shot.
The Saints picked up 2 more in the top of the sixth to cut the lead in half at 6-3.
Copiah answered in their half of the frame with 2 insurance runs. Russ Singleton homered for the third time this season.
Copiah held the Saints scoreless in the top of the seventh to win the game 8-3.
Scotty Reese, 10-2, went the distance on the mound for the Colonels. Singleton led Copiah at the plate with a homer and a single.
The two teams met Tuesday night in Natchez. A Copiah win would advance the Colonels into next week’s South AA championship series. A loss would require a deciding game at Gallman on Thursday.
