Indians implement new style offense, defense

INDIAN COACHES FOR 2009 –Hazlehurst is gearing up for another district title run and post-season play in football. Coaching the team this year are, front row from left, Andrae Carter, running backs; Omar Sherrod, receivers and defensive backs; and Tedric Thompson, defensive line. Standing from left are Vince Granberry, defensive coordinator, and Todd McDaniel, head coach and offensive coordinator. The Indians are in a jamboree at Yazoo City next Friday before opening with Hinds AHS in a class

After a deep playoff run in 2008, the Hazlehurst Indians are poised to go even further this season.  Head coach Todd McDaniel returns several starters on both sides of the ball, and the Indians have added familiar name to the coaching staff.

Vince Granberry, formerly the head coach of Raymond High School for two years, joins the staff as defensive coordinator.  Granberry also coached at Terry for three years and at Northwest Rankin for one.

Granberry will implement a 4-4 base defense with multiple looks.  He has four starters returning.

“I’m excited, and I think our players are, too.  We’ll be ready come August 21,” Granberry said.

McDaniel’s offense will be similar to last year’s, but with a few more options.

“We have a big receiver out there that we can throw to now, which will help our running game,” McDaniel said.

The Indians’ ground attack has been successful over the years, so the new passing attack will bring even more excitement.

Hazlehurst opens at Hinds AHS on August 21 before hosting Morton on August 28.
