Cobras win; Colonels, Indians fall at home

Coach Tommy Clopton and the Wesson Cobras rolled into Richland on Friday afternoon expecting a dog-fight in the season’s opening game.  Instead, the Cobras rolled away from Rankin County 42-13 winners, claiming their first victory of the season.  Statistics were not available as of this posting.  The Cobras next play in Wesson against Bogue Chitto at 7:30 on Friday evening.

Meanwhile, the Hazlehurst Indians had all they could stand from visiting Morton, dropping a  46-28 decision.  Morton rolled up the game’s first 18 points before allowing Hazlehurst’s Gabriel Gray to return a kickoff 78 yards for the Indians’ first score.  The visitors led 46-14 at one point in the third quarter.  Hazlehurst added a 7-yard run by Leviticus Cain in the second quarter.  The Indians picked up two late scores–receptions of 8 and 14 yards by Torrey Quinn from Gray and Williams, respectively–to close the final margin.  The Indians travel to South Pike next Friday.

And, Copiah Academy was bested by the Brookhaven Academy Cougars in Gallman to the tune of 47-12 Friday evening, dropping the Colonels to 1-1.  The Colonels travel to Destin, FL to play Rocky Bayou next Friday in a Labor Day weekend showdown.

More in-depth coverage of Friday night’s games will be in the next print edition of the Copiah County Courier, in newstands and mailboxes next Wednesday!
