Area b-ball teams in action
The Copiah Academy Lady Colonels split a pair of games last week as they opened their season at the ACCS Pre-Season Tournament in Natchez.
On Monday night, Brookhaven Academy jumped out to an 18-3 lead in the opening quarter and led 31-9 at halftime. That lead proved to be insurmountable as the Lady Cougars coasted to the easy victory. Sophomore Whitney Phillips led the Lady Colonels with 5 points, followed by Madelon Cline with 3 points. Elizabeth Cliburn, Lori Baham, Rachel Strait, Kacie Berry, and Kelsey Aikens all had 2 points apiece in a losing effort.
Copiah rebounded Saturday by pounding the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams 47-25 at the ACCS Tourney. CA jumped in front 12-5 in the opening period and upped the margin to 25-9 by halftime. The Lady Colonels gradually increased their lead the rest of the way as they pulled away for the lopsided win.
Senior guard Madelon Cline led CA with 9 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Close behind were Rachel Strait and Kacie Berry with 8 points each, followed by Lori Baham with 7 points.
Other Copiah scorers included Whitney Phillips with 5 points, Mary Landrum Pyron with 4 points, and a trio of players with 2 points apiece: Elizabeth Cliburn, Brooke Wilson, and Logan Berry.
The Lady Colonels also picked up a win over ACCS Tuesday evening to improve to 2-1. The Colonels dropped their game with the Rebels, starting the season at 0-1.
The Wesson Cobras and Lady Cobras have also started the season, so far with a mixed bag of results. The Cobras are 0-2 after dropping games to West Lincoln on Saturday and Lawrence County on Monday.
West Lincoln led 20-19 at halftime on Saturday, then outscored the Cobras 28-11 in the second half to to take a 48-30 win. Tyler Lumley was the lone Cobra in double figures with 10 points. Hunter Hood had 6 and Zach Fetcko chipped in 5.
On Monday, the Cobras hosted 4A Lawrence County, giving the Cougars all they could handle for four quarters before falling 62-57. The Cobras led 36-32 at halftime, then 50-47 after the third. Lawrence outscored the Cobras 15-7 in the final frame. Lumley was the big scorer with 26, while Hunter Hood contributed 14.
The Lady Cobras are 1-1 after defeating West Lincoln and coming up short against Lawrence County.
Ann Shelby Davis led all scorers against the Lady Bearcats on Saturday with 21, helping her team win 60-26. W. Lincoln never was a threat, as the Lady Cobras led 34-15 at halftime. Shauntay Walker, Macie Case and Danielle Tadlock all chipped in 8 apiece.
On Monday, the Lady Cobras tangled with the Lady Cougars of Lawrence County, coming up short, 50-46. The Cobras led 33-27 after three quarters, but suffered an onslaught of points by the visitors in fourth, outscored 23-13 for the final margin. Davis again hit for 21. Tadlock landed 8 and Walker, 7, in the losing effort.
