Prep, Bowling Green earn sweeps over Copiah

The Copiah Academy boys and girls varsity basketball teams were thankful to have a few days off after losses at Jackson Prep and Bowling Green School last week.

On Monday night, the Colonels traveled to Flowood, where they absorbed a 77-43 spanking at the hands of the Patriots. Prep led by only one, 11-10, after one quarter, but outscored CA 30-11 in the second period to grab a twenty-point halftime lead, 41-21. Copiah closed the gap with a 16-12 run in the third quarter, but Prep sealed the win with a 24-6 margin over the final eight minutes.

Reece Hankins led the Colonels with 19 points. Other CA scorers included Russell Hood and Dennis Harper with 6 points each, Michael Bagley with 5 points, Adam Ganucheau with 3 points, and Ben Boone and Cameron Bridges with 2 points apiece. Meanwhile, Prep was led by Pack Toler and De Graeber with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The results were no better Tuesday night as the Bowling Green Bucs pulled away in the second half to record a 70-42 win over CA.

Bowling Green led 16-9 after one period of play, but the Colonels rallied to take a 26-25 lead at the half. In the second half, however, it was all Bucs as they outscored Copiah 26-6 in the third period and then 19-10 over the final eight minutes.

Boone led CA with 10 points, while Dennis Harper, Bagley, and Hankins each had 8 points. Ganucheau and Rob Pyron scored 3 points apiece, and Hood and Drew Granger closed out the Copiah scoring with one point each.

GIRLS’ ACTION

The Jackson Prep Lady Patriots outscored the Copiah Lady Colonels 15-3 in the second quarter enroute to a 38-21 win in Flowood last week. Prep led 27-12 after three periods and edged the Lady Colonels 11-9 over the final eight minutes.

Whitney Phillips led CA with 8 points. Other Copiah totals included Elizabeth Cliburn with 4 points, Lori Baham with 3 points, and trio of players with 2 points each: Brooke Wilson, Mary Landrum Pyron, and Kacie Berry.

On Tuesday night, Bowling Green jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the opening period and went on to beat the Lady Colonels 45-22. Copiah stayed with the Lady Bucs during the second and third quarters, but were outscored 16-5 in the final eight minutes.

Whitney Phillips led CA with 11 points. Other Copiah totals included Rachel Strait with 5 points, Kacie Berry with 4 points, and Baham with 2 points. Haire led the winners with 13 points.
