Wesson teams captured 3rd in Dexter Classic

A third place finish was the result for both Wesson basketball teams, after each finished the week with two wins and one loss in the Dexter Classic.

GIRLS ACTION

The Lady Cobras blew out under-manned Sacred Heart 75-14 on Monday.  On Tuesday, the Lady Cobras ran out of time in a comeback bid against Perry Central, and fell 44-43.  In Wednesday’s consolation game, the Lady Cobras never trailed and defeated West Marion 49-38.

Senior guard Ann Shelby Davis led Wesson with 24 points in Tuesday’s contest, which saw Wesson battle back from a 13-1 first quarter deficit to pull with 5 at halftime.  Shauntay Walker scrapped for 7 points.  LyChrissa Harris (4), Ansley Schimmel (3), Macie Case (3) and Danielle Tadlock (2) rounded out the scoring for Wesson.

In Wednesday’s win, Wesson built a 30-15 halftime cushion and cruised for the win for third place.  Davis tossed in 13, followed by Schimmel with 9, Tadlock with 8, Harris with 5, Case with 4, Walker with 4, Chelsea Lucas with 4 and Elsie Miller with 2.

BOYS ACTION

After dismantling Sacred Heart 75-48 on Monday, the Cobras faced Salem in the semi-finals, coming up just short at 62-61.

Wesson saw Salem chip away at a 29-24 halftime deficit and take a 2 point lead after three quarters.  The two teams battled almost even in the fourth, as the Cobras outscored Salem 18-17.  But, it was not enough, and Wesson fell to the consolation bracket.

The Cobras had a balanced scoring attack, as Tyler Lumley pumped in 14, Gib Britt notched 13 and Zach Fetcko, 10.  D. J. Coleman followed with 8; Terry Brown, 7; Kyle Cross, 4; Hunter Hood, 3; and, Caleb Broome, 2.

On Wednesday, the Cobras found their groove and knocked off Amite County 64-56 to capture third place.

Wesson held a six point lead at halftime, 31-24, and outscored Amite Co. 33-32 in the final half for the win.

Hunter Hood stepped up and led the Cobras with 17.  Lumley, with another solid effort, added 15. Other scorers were Coleman with 9, Brown with 8, Britt with 7, Cross with 6 and Fetcko with 2.

The Lady Cobras improved to 12-4.  The Cobras are now 5-10.

CO-LIN JH TOURNAMENT NEXT WEEK

The junior high Cobras and Lady Cobras, both with records of 10-1, have secured the number one seed for next week’s post-season tournament at Bogue Chitto.

“Both teams have played very well in winning the district,” said coach Ron Kessler, who has been serving as head coach for both teams.  Girls’ coach Hugh Webb underwent surgery earlier in December that has kept him away from the court.  Webb is recovering nicely, Kessler said, and is eager to get back to work.

“He’s progressing as well as predicted.  I know he misses being around the kids, and they miss him also.  We look forward to his return to the court, hopefully in the next few days,” Kessler added.

The Co-Lin Junior High Tournament will be played next Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at Bogue Chitto.  Both Wesson teams will play Wednesday afternoon against the winner of the 4 vs. 5 game on Monday.  Game times will be 4:00 for the girls and 5:15 for the boys.
