MEMA urges preparedness for more wintry weather

PEARL – The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency want residents to prepare for the possibility of significant snow accumulations Thursday night through Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for most of the state.

“It appears the central and southern areas of Mississippi are facing the greatest risk, especially when it comes to travel.” said MEMA Director Mike Womack. “We will be in close contact with our counties and other state agencies to provide any help they might need.”

The NWS office in Jackson is forecasting between 4-6 inches of snow for a line between Interstate 20 down to Highway 84, with lighter amounts to the north. “Right now it appears the snow will start late Thursday evening and get heavier through the night,” said Alan Gerard, Chief Meteorologist of the NWS office in Jackson. “The forecast could change a bit, but we want people to be prepared.”

MEMA will provide emergency information as soon as it becomes necessary. Follow updates on our website, www.msema.org, and on Facebook and Twitter using MSEMA.
