Mary Davis Granger

Mary Davis Granger, formerly of Hazlehurst, died Thursday, April 8, 2010 in Talladega, AL.

Services will be held Monday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Talladega.

Mary Granger was born and reared in Talladega. She was an honors graduate from Talladega High School. She worked for Dr. Arthur Toole for 18 years and was a charter member of the Helas Study Club which was organized to bring blind and sighted women together to study and improve their community.

She and her family moved to Hazlehurst in 1967 where she worked with her husband to build Royal Maid Industries for the Blind. They traveled extensively promoting employment for the blind. She and her husband retired to Talledega in 1995, wehre she continued her association with the blind community, volunteering at Alabama Schol for the Blind and supporting student projects through Alabama Council for the Blind.

She was a Methodist. and taught Sunday school and served on the church council.

Survivors include: husband of 65 years, John Granger; sisters, Betty Davis Annis and Natalie Davis Turpin; children, Martha Olvera (Russell), Cathy Sparkman (Billy), Jeanne Perkins (Bill), Philip Granger, Roy Granger (Joyce); close family friends Laura and Jim Purdie and Betty and Tom Wimberley; grandchildren, Scott Sparkman, Leslie Johnson (Rob), Matt Perkins (Wanda), Lauren McCook (Matt), Christie Matthews, Jennifer Whalen, John Granger (Mindy), Chuck Granger, Jake Granger; great grandchildren, Seth, Macie and Brady Sparkman; Philip Pilgreen, Alex and Nicholas Perkins, Carley and Emily Whalen, Chase Matthews, David Johnson, Taylor Kate and Luke McCook, and Jack Granger.

In lieu o fflowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church, Talladega, or to the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind Foundation.

Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Fellowship Sunday School Class, First UMC; and Saturday Morning Coffee Club.
