Fire consumes four Crystal Springs businesses

An early morning blaze destroyed at least three businesses, a Masonic lodge, and an apartment in downtown Crystal Springs on Monday. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Most of a block in Crystal Springs’ historic downtown is gone following an early morning blaze Monday.

The fire was reported at 12:58 a.m. Monday. Numerous fire departments responded to assist in bringing the fire under control around 3 a.m., including a ladder truck from Hinds County which greatly assisted in preventing the further spread of the blaze.

The fire consumed Bates Alterations, Mr. D’s Restaurant, and the Eastern Star and Masonic Lodges above the restaurant. Also destroyed were the shop of carpenter Ron Dionne, a storefront church and former Trinity Cafe. A loan company and Ken’s Bakery received water and smoke damage. A storage building behind Tillman Furniture was destroyed. That store and many others on the main square were filled with smoke.

One family has been displaced by the fire which destroyed their apartment above the former cafe. No one was injured, all of the occupants being alerted to the fire and escaping safely.
