Gray, Cain lead first All-Copiah County Courier team

The Copiah County Courier announces the first ever All Copiah County Team:
MOST VALUABLE OFFENSIVE PLAYER
Gabriel Gray
ATH – Sr. – Hazlehurst
The 6’3” Gray led the Indians with 27 total touchdowns while getting 20 of those on the ground. Gray had 1231 yards rushing and 441 yards passing for the Indians. A 7-3A All District team member was just named the defensive MVP for the South in the Bernard Blackwell North-South AllStar Classic. “Gabe is a great athlete and I hate to see him go,” stated Indian head coach Todd McDaniel.

ALL-COUNTY OFFENSE
QB – Matt Smith – Sr. – Wesson – Smith was selected the All District 6-2A Most Valuable offensive player. Smith accounted for 26 total touchdowns with 14 of those coming through the air. Matt had 738 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns while throwing for 1036 yards and only 3 interceptions on the year.

RB – Kelton Smith – Jr. – Copiah Academy–Smith was Copiah’s leading rusher and scorer, finishing with 1,394 yards and 16 TD’s.  Five of his scores were kick return touchdowns.

RB – Demetrius Cain – So. – Hazlehurst – The 6’1” 190 lb. Cain had 1100 yards rushing for the Indians and starred on defense as well with 112 tackles. All District in 7-3A.

RB – Steve Jones – Jr. – Wesson – The junior had 839 yards rushing and 9 TD’s in a year where he had to fill the injured shoes of two starters.

WR – Jamarius James – Sr. – Hazlehurst – The 5’9” 195 pound James, the top Indian aerial receiver, had over 500 yards receiving for the Indians while averaging 43 yards per punt for the Indians as well.

WR – D.J. Coleman – Sr. – Wesson – The big play threat had 8 touchdowns on 560 yards receiving on the year as he struck for big plays including an 89 yarder. He also had 213 yards rushing and 4 TD’s on the ground.

OL – Jaquez Copeland – Jr. – Crystal Springs – The 5’8” junior was coach Johnny Magee’s most dependable lineman in a major rebuilding season.

OL – Terry Baker – So. – Hazlehurst – The 6’1” 290 lb. Baker was a bulldog in the trenches for the Indians and was often ran behind when 3 yards were needed. All District in 7-3A.

OL – T.J. Smith – Sr. – Copiah Academy – Smith was a great blocker for the Colonels, scoring high in nearly every game.  On defense he proved to be a run stopper with 58 tackles, including 4 sacks and 11 others for a loss.

OL – Zac Wilson – Jr. – Wesson – The junior was consistent for a young offensive line that had to battle through a beat up backfield all year.

OL – Kyle Dominique – Sr. – Hazlehurst – The 5’10” 235 lb. Dominique was the center on a talented offensive line and brought high praise from the coaching staff.

ATH – Jamario Benson – So. – Crystal Springs – The youth movement at Crystal Springs was carried by Benson who led the team in touchdowns and all purpose yards.

MOST VALUABLE DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Leviticus Cain
DL – Sr. – Hazlehurst
The 6’1” 230 lb. Cain was the force for the Hazlehurst defense. The North-South All Star Game selection and All District 7-3A led the Indians 121 tackles, 11 forced fumbles, and 3 fumble recoveries.

ALL COUNTY DEFENSE
DL – Derrick Lyles – Jr. – Wesson – Lyles was a nasty force as he was named the 6-2A Co-Defensive player of the year. The junior had 88 tackles and 3 sacks on the year while dominating his side of the line.

DL – Kentarius Curtis – Sr. – Hazlehurst – With 11 1/2 sacks and 70 tackles, the 6’3” 220 lb. senior was a force at the point of attack. All District in 7-3A.

DL – William Ramsey – Sr. – Hazlehurst – Rambo, 6’2” 220, had 61 tackles and 6 1/2 sacks for the Indians in a year that saw him harass the QB every Friday night.

DL – Morgan Robinson – Sr. – Wesson – Robinson was consistent for the Cobras delivering a steady 58 tackles for the Cobras.

DL – Desmond Tucker – So. – Hazlehurst – The 6’1” 235 ponder had 54 tackles and 11 quarterback hurries on the year.

LB – Drew Granger – Sr. – Copiah Academy – The 5’11” 200 lb. linebacker made the MAIS All-Star game for the Colonels in which he recorded 4 tackles.  He led Copiah’s defense with 103 tackles, 4 pass break ups, 5 forced fumbles, 2 fumbles recovered and 6 tackles for loss.

LB – Payton Cupit – Jr. – Wesson – The high energy linebacker was a vocal leader on the field with 104 tackles on the year for the Cobras.

LB – Barron Miller – Jr. – Wesson – Miller played alot of linebacker for the Cobras after being moved from the defensive line. Miller had 101 tackles for the Cobras.

LB – Kendarius Williams – Sr. – Crystal Springs – The hard hitting 5’9” 195 lb. senior was credited with 92 tackles and led the Tigers defense.

LB – Gage Wilson – Sr. – Wesson – The biggest compliment for Wilson is he played dead tired going both ways for the Cobras while being credited with a team high 106 tackles.

DB – Paxton Cupit – Jr. – Wesson – The safety/linebacker hybrid had 86 tackles for the Cobras and was also an excellent receiver for the Cobras with over 400 yards receiving.

DB – Cornelius Crump – Sr. – Hazlehurst – The 5’9” 175 pounder had 42 tackles on the season and 4 interceptions while being called on to lockdown the opponents best receiver. All District in 7-3A.

DB – Devin Harper – Sr. – Copiah Academy– Harper rushed for 738 yards and scored 7 TD’s.  On defense he was a force with 47 tackles and 3 INT’s.
