Chance Walker, 23, of Hazlehurst, was arrested Tuesday and charged with capital murder.
According to Hazlehurst police chief Byron Swilley, Ixcot’s wallet had been taken, with robbery as the motive in the attack. Less than $10 was taken in the robbery, said Lt. Darian Murray on Thursday morning.
Ixcot died from massive head wounds received in the attack, according to Copiah County Coroner Ellis Stuart. “According to the evidence, we believe that the suspect used a hammer during the robbery attempt,” Murray added.
Walker was arrested at the Hazlehurst Police Department on Tuesday. Murray said that Walker came into the department to try to dissuade the investigators that he was involved with the crime after finding out that he was a suspect. A tip from Crimestoppers led police to suspect Walker’s involvement.
Walker awaits an initial appearance in court, which will take place some time Thursday. Police expect Judge Jim Shannon to deny bond.
The murder is the first in Hazlehurst since 2007.
