Wesson netters sweep Piney Woods

The Wesson High School tennis team returned to action on March 23 against Piney Woods and came away with an impressive 7-0 victory.

When asked about the team’s performance, Coach Rod Martin said, “I was very impressed with Piney Woods athleticism and determination, but we played solidly in every match and earned every point we won. I am really proud of our team’s work ethic in practice and their competitive spirits in the matches. They want to win just as much or more than I want them to win.”

In Boys Singles competition, Emilio Collado overwhelmed Safir Monroe 6-0, 6-0. In Boys Doubles, Cullen Greer and Zack Wilson won by default when one of the Piney Woods players missed his plane from Washington, D.C.  

In other Boys Doubles action, Josh Smith and Gib Britt defeated Qaronfredrick Meeks and Chris Warren 4-6, 6-3 (10-4). In Mixed Doubles, Abigail Schimmel and Steve Del Cid were victorious against Misrak Seifu and Keair Butts 6-0, 6-1.

In Girls Singles action, Summer Rials handed Naaya Bassey a loss at 6-1, 6-0. In Girls Doubles competition, Jordan Nettles and Maddy Rials defeated Telmya Middleton and Vergil Bowleg 5-7, 6-1 (10-5).

Also competing in Girls Doubles action for the Cobras were Brooke Ryan and Effie Forrest, who defeated Piney Woods’ LaQuisha McGrew and Khalidah Quinn in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

The Cobras finish the regular season competing on Wednesday, April 6 at the Brookhaven City Courts against the Loyd Star Hornets and on Friday, April 8 at the Brookhaven Country Club against the Enterprise Yellow Jackets.
