Alfa Insurance mobilizes to help storm victims

MONTGOMERY, Ala., April 28 — Alfa Insurance® has mobilized claims adjusters and Mobile Response Units in the wake of deadly tornadoes that hit the Southeast Wednesday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost loved ones in these storms,” said AlfaTM President Jerry Newby. “As we begin the long process of recovery, Alfa is prepared to deliver on our company’s promise to be there when our policyholders need us most. Our dedicated employees, strong financial base and advance planning make Alfa uniquely prepared to respond quickly and compassionately.”

Alfa is sending Mobile Response Units to the Guntersville and Cullman areas. The 38-foot-long buses can serve as fully functional Alfa offices, even if power and communications are out in the impacted area. Using the latest satellite technology, the MRUs can connect to Alfa’s computer network and are equipped with cellular and land line connectivity.

The company also is sending additional claims adjusters into the areas hit hardest by Wednesday’s storms. Alfa Senior Vice President of Claims Jerry Johnson said the company is prioritizing claims based on severity and has implemented its catastrophe plan to ensure claims are handled as quickly as possible.

“We are committed to using every available resource to help our policyholders recover from these storms,” Johnson said.

Johnson advised policyholders to use extreme caution when returning to areas impacted by the storms.

“Our first concern is the safety of our policyholders,” Johnson said. “Downed electrical lines, debris and buildings with structural damage can be dangerous. We encourage policyholders to follow the advice of the authorities and return only when it is safe to do so.”

Johnson encouraged policyholders to make temporary repairs to their property to prevent additional damage, but cautioned them to only do business with reputable companies.

“Victims of disaster are prime targets for criminals,” he said. “Each year, insurance scams account for $30 billion in losses. Policyholders should be wary of unsolicited or unexpected offers to perform repairs or conduct inspections.”
