The Hazlehurst Indians (2-1) traveled south on I-55 Friday evening looking for a fight and found one in the Brookhaven Panthers by almost pulling off the upset but falling 7-6.
“I am very proud of my team,” stated Hazlehurst head coach Randel Montgomery.  “We had some chances to quit but we stepped up and made big play after big play.  We outplayed Brookhaven.”
After trailing 7-0 at the half, the Indians would find the endzone when wide receiver Dedric Resse would catch a Kenny Coleman pass from 11 yards out to pull the Indians within 7-6.  The two point pass failed and the Indians desperately needed those two points.
The story of the night was when the Indians turned the ball over on their own three yard line and then asked the defense to amass a goal line stand against the Brookhaven offense.  Four plays later, the Indians had stuffed the Brookhaven running back and the Indians faced the length of the football field for the win with under two minutes left to play.
The Indians fell short but it was not for lack of effort.  The Indians were led on the ground by Demetrius Cain who had 53 yards on 11 carries.  Quarterback Kenny Coleman was 13 of23 passing for 141 yards and a touchdown.
The Indians, 2-1, host Wingfield on Friday night at 7:30.
