The Copiah Academy Lady Colonels returned to their winning ways as they won all five games last week and finished first in the Co-Lin Tournament at Monticello. CA is now 24-3 and ranked second among MAIS teams in the state.
Early in the week, CA traveled to Prep and nipped the Lady Patriots 1-0 in 8 innings. Meghan Johnson (9-2) went the distance for the Lady Colonels and scattered 7 hits, striking out 5. Copiah scored the only run of the game on the tie-breaker rule as the runner on second, Victoria Allen, was sacrificed to third, and then raced home on Kamryn Vanlandingham’s 2-out single. The Lady Colonels then turned a double play in the bottom of the inning as third baseman Kaitlyn Taylor fielded a ground ball, checked the runner at third, and threw to first for one out. First baseman Kelli Berry then fired the ball home, where her sister, Kacie Berry, tagged the runner out to help secure the win.
On Saturday, the Lady Colonels edged the Oak Forest Lady Jackets 5-3 in the first game of the Co-Lin Tournament at Monticello. CA scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI-single by Kamryn Vanlandingham and a sacrifice fly by Kacie Berry. The Lady Colonels added 3 more runs in the fifth, highlighted by Morgan Brown’s leadoff single, Vanlandingham’s RBI-single, and a 2-run double by Kaitlyn Taylor. Meghan Johnson (10-2) was the winning pitcher. Copiah’s offense was led by Brown and Vanlandingham, each of whom had a pair of singles.
In the second game of the Co-Lin Tourney last Saturday, CA’s Kaitlyn Taylor (7-1) tossed a no-hitter and struck out 7 as the Lady Colonels smashed the Simpson Academy Lady Cougars 11-0. Jordan Jones led the Copiah attack with 4 RBI’s and a pair of hits, including a 3-run homer in the second. Other standouts included Lindsey Walker, who had a single and double, and Morgan Brown with 3 singles.
CA ace Meghan Johnson (11-2) followed Kaitlyn Taylor’s no-hitter with one of her own as she pitched the Lady Colonels to a 12-0 win over the Columbia Academy Lady Cougars last Saturday. Johnson came within one out of a perfect game before walking a batter with two outs in the third. She got plenty of offensive support from her teammates: Jordan Jones with a double and single, Morgan Brown with 3 singles, Katelyn Taylor with a single and double and 4 RBI’s, and Lindsey Walker with a pair of singles and 3 RBI’s.
In the final game of the day, Copiah continued its onslaught by mowing down Brookhaven Academy 10-0 as Jordan Jones (5-0) tossed a 3-inning one-hitter at the Co-Lin Tourney. CA’s Kaitlyn Taylor had 5 RBI’s and 3 hits, including a double, while Misty Allen contributed a pair of singles. In addition, Lindsey Walker had a 2-run double in the third.
On Monday, the Colonels dropped Parklane by a final of 2-0, improving to 25-3. Meghan Johnson, 12-2, picked up the win. Berry and Allen registered doubles. Walker added a triple. Vanlandingham notched 2 singles.
The Lady Colonels are scheduled to face Starkville Academy on the road today, then play in the Prep tournament over the weekend. Presbyterian Christian comes to Gallman on Monday, Sept. 19, then CA travels to Hillcrest on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
The south state tournament will be held at Prep, beginning September 24, followed by the state tournament on October 1. The state site will be announced later.
