West Marion spoils Wesson homecoming

BY BRADLEY CROW
The Wesson Cobras (1-4) lost a 16-8 lead in the fourth quarter of the homecoming contest to drop a 22-16 decision to West Marion Friday night at Stone Stadium in Wesson.
The Cobras fumbled the ball with five minutes remaining in the game and West Marion returned it to the 3 yard line before pounding it in and taking a 22-16 lead.  The final two Cobra drives ended with interceptions as the Cobras were stunned on homecoming night.
“Our guys played hard,” explained Wesson head coach Tommy Clopton.  “We just have to step up and start making those three or four plays that decide the ballgame.”
The West Marion Trojans returned the opening kickoff inside the 10 yard line before punching it in to race out to an 8-0 lead.  The Cobras would respond with a Steve Jones run of 7 yards and then a pass from quarterback Jacob Fischer to wideout Payton Cupit to tie the game 8-8.
The Cobras would take the lead 16-8 on a 17 yard reverse run by senior running back Austin Graham.  Steve Jones would run in the two point conversion.
After knotting the game 16 all, the Trojans took advantage of the Wesson fumble and ended homecoming night in Wesson as the victors 22-16.  Wesson was led offensively by running back Austin Graham who finished with 10 rushes for 88 yards and a score.
Defensively, the Cobras were led by linebacker Payton Cupit who had 9 tackles and a fumble recovery.  Middle linebacker Derrick Lyles had 7 stops while tackle Cullen Greer had 6 tackles.
The Cobras get a week off to lick their wounds before opening up district play on the road at Amite County a week from Friday.
