The Copiah Academy Lady Colonels blasted the Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers 11-1 in their first game at the MAIS South State AAA Tournament in Flowood last Saturday.
Meghan Johnson (15-3) held Starkville to just 3 hits, while teammate Kamryn Vanlandingham drove in 6 runs with a pair of bases-loaded doubles. Morgan Brown also had a pair of hits for the winners as they improved to 32-5. They continue tournament play today at noon at Jackson Prep against Parklane Academy.
Earlier in the week, Hillcrest Christian scored 2 runs, one of them unearned, in the bottom of the fifth to nip the Lady Colonels 7-6 in Jackson. Meghan Johnson (13-3) was the hardluck loser. Kamryn Vanlandingham and Lindsey Walker each had a pair of hits, including a double apiece, in a losing effort. Kacie Berry also had a double, and Johnson a triple. All of the extra-base hits came in the top of the second as the Lady Colonels scored 6 runs to overcome a 5-0 deficit – only to lose the lead 3 innings later.
Copiah swept a doubleheader from the Presbyterian Christian Lady Bobcats in Gallman on Tuesday, blanking them 14-0 in the opener and 15-0 in the nightcap. In the first game, Meghan Johnson (14-3) was the winning pitcher as she scattered 4 hits and helped her own cause with a pair of hits. She also received plenty of help from her teammates: Kacie Berry with 3 hits; Morgan Brown with 4 RBI’s and 2 hits, including a triple in the first; Jordan Jones with 4 RBI’s, including a 2-run double in the top of the second; and Kamryn Vanlandingham with a 2-run double in the fifth.
In the second game, Kaitlyn Taylor (10-2) tossed a one-hitter and had a pair of singles with 3 RBI’s. Other offensive standouts included Victoria Allen with 4 RBI’s on a pair of 2-run doubles; Kamryn Vanlandingham with 2 RBI’s and 3 hits, including a double; Jordan Jones with 2 RBI’s and 2 hits, including a double; and Kacie Berry, also with 2 RBI’s and 2 hits, including a double. In addition, Meghan Johnson had a double and a pair of RBI’s for the winners.
