The Bruins of St. Joe had just enough to escape Wesson (4-5, 3-1) with what could very well be the #1 seed out of the districts in their hands.
“It was just the way it was supposed to be,” stated head coach Tommy Clopton.  “Two good football teams were playing their hearts out on the field.  Unfortunately, we came up on the short end of it.”
The Cobras were sparked by a 55 yard INT return for a touchdown by cornerback Chris Craft to take a 6-0 lead in first quarter.  The Bruins responded to take a 7-6 lead in the see-saw first half battle.
The Cobras took the lead 12-7 on Steven Jones’ 7 yard run.
St. Joe regained the lead 14-12 by halftime on a freak third-and-26 play where Cobra defenders were out-reached by St. Joe’s Gabe Phalen for the catch and run.
Wesson regained the lead in the third quarter on a 45 yard interception return for a TD by DB Jay Haynes.  Jacob Fischer passed to WR Paxton Cupit for the two point conversion put the Cobras up 20-14.
The Bruins got a 64 yard rumble for a TD by David Lemoine to regain the lead.  St. Joe added a late 35 yard field goal by Blayne Jones to seal the deal 24-20 for the Bruins. A late Cobra possession fell short of the end zone as time expired.
Wesson was led by Steve Jones on offense, with 11 carries for 58 yards and a touchdown.  Running back Austin Graham had 57 yards and a TD on 15 carries.  Wide receiver Paxton Cupit had 6 catches for 47 yards,  while Fischer threw for 70 yards overall.
Defensively,  Derrick Lyles had 6 tackles and 3 pass breakups.  Payton Cupit and Cullen Greer had 6 tackles each.  Tyler Hall, Javoris Smith, and Nick Lewis each had five stops.
The Cobras hit the road to fourth-place Puckett, with hopes of snagging the no. 2 seed and a home game in the playoffs .  The Cobras also look to knock off the Wolves for the first time since Puckett joined the division three years ago.  Game time is 7:00 p.m.
