Cobras knock off Indians

A good crowd attended Saturday’s baseball game at Wesson High School, featuring the visiting Hazlehurst Indians against the Wesson Cobras.  Wesson won the game 6-4 despite committing 5 errors.
Hazlehurst took the lead, scoring 2 in the 3rd inning.  Wesson got 1 back in the bottom of the frame, then notched 3 more in the 4th inning.  
Hazlehurst chipped away at the Cobras’ lead with 1 run in the top of the 5th.  Wesson took the lead for good by scoring 2 more runs in the bottom of the 5th and held on as Hazlehurst scored once more in the 6th.
Leaders for Wesson included Quinten Munn, who was 1-for-3 with a double, and RBI and one run scored; also, Josh Smith was 2-for-3 with a run scored; and, Cullen Greer aided the Cobras with an RBI and a run scored.
Munn pitched 2 innings, struck out 3 and allowed 2 runs.  Kaleb Skinner followed Munn, pitching 2 innings with 3 strikeouts and picking up the win.  Alex Smith closed out the game for Wesson over the final 3 innings, picking up a save.
Earlier on Saturday the Cobras defeated East marion 6-5, picking up 5 runs in the first two innings and the winning run in the bottom of the 7th.
Zach Stafford nearly picked up a complete game on the mound, lasting 6 2/3 innings.  He was relieved by Kaleb Skinner in the top of the 7th.  Skinner got the final out and earned the win after facing just one batter.
Paxton Cupit led Wesson with 2 hits, a run and an RBI.  Other impact players included Bailey Warren (2-for-2), Alex Smith (2-for-4), Munn (1 RBI) and Greer (2-for-3, RBI).

Wesson lost a pair of one run games in the Lawrence County Spring Break tournament on Monday.
In game one, the host team knocked off the Cobras 8-7, despite a furious comeback by the visitors.  Lawrence County led 8-3 until the top of the 5th, when Wesson picked up 2 runs to cut the lead to 8-5.  The Cobras added 2 more in the top of the 6th to close the gap to 8-7.

Mendenhall bested the Cobras in the second game, winning 11-10.  The Tigers jumped ahead 7-2 after 2 innings before Wesson exploded for 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd.  Wesson took a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but the Tigers scored 3 in the top half of the 6th to lead 11-9.  Wesson got one in the bottom of the inning for the final margin.
