April is Hydrant Flushing Month in Hazlehurst

City workers monitor an opened hydrant along Monticello Street in Hazlehurst.
The department flushes hydrants twice a year. “Our hydrant-flushing program is very important to our water system. It is an integral part of our efforts to deliver the safest and highest quality water possible. A clean water distribution system also reduces taste and odor problems and results in better appearing water,” stated Lloyd Hillard, Superintendent of the Hazlehurst Water Department.
The program typically is a five day process. Completion of the program is expected to be sometime during mid May. Changes to this timetable may be required, if other maintenance issues should arise such as service leaks, water quality concerns and sewer and other problems.
Flushing will take place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. All residents are urged to use caution while traveling around the hydrant flushing crews and while entering areas of water accumulation, stated Hillard.
