No one hurt in blaze that destroyed 3 businesses

Terry Channell, owner of Channell’s Heating and A/C, left, talks with friends and co-workers about the fire that claimed his business and two others adjacent to his on Georgetown Street in Hazlehurst early Monday morning.

Brown’s Auto Sales was burned to the ground.

An early morning fire on Georgetown Street in Hazlehurst resulted in at least two businesses completely destroyed and one other severely impacted.

Responders from Hazlehurst Fire Department, Hazlehurst Volunteer Fire Department and at least one other fire department arrived at the scene shortly after midnight to find one business totally engulfed in flames.  After unsuccessful efforts to extinguish the flames, the fire spread to an adjacent business and eventually overtook that structure.  Witnesses said that windy conditions hampered the firefighters’ ability to effectively douse the flames.

No injuries were reported.

By mid-morning, the structures were still smoldering.  Investigators from Hazlehurst Police Department, the State Fire Marshall’s office and other agencies were descending upon the area today to begin putting the pieces together.
