Wolfpack finish fourth in state

AMORY – Rain forced cancellation of the final round of the MACJC State Golf Tournament at Riverbirch Golf Club in Amory with the Wolfpack in fourth place (311), one-shot behind second place Northwest and East Mississippi (310). Co-Lin qualifies for the NJCAA Region 23 Golf Tournament, which will be held April 22-23 at Big Oaks in Tupelo.
Gulf Coast captured its third consecutive state championship with a 297, led by individual medalist Brad Thornton who shot a 2-under-par 70. The Top 4 teams and the host, Itawamba, plus the next five individuals qualified to play next week’s tournament in Tupelo.
The Wolfpack were led by freshman Alex Clark who finished in a three-way tie for third with a 1-over 73. Rounding out the scoring for the Wolfpack were Hunter Hood (76), Keaton Stamps (78), Justin Danise (84), and David Nichols (85).
Gulf Coast’s Brad Thornton captured medalist honors with a 2-under 70. Chad Cupples of Northwest MS finished second at even par 72.
The Co-Lin trio of Clark (75.64), Stamps (75.91), and Hood (75.78) were named MACJC Second Team All-State. All-State honors are based on stroke average. Joining the trio on the Second Team were Weston Wallace of East Mississippi (75.55) and Chad Cupples (75.55).
Gulf Coast’s Marcus Fox was the Hubert Tucker Award recipient with the lowest stroke average of 74.27.
Named to the MACJC All-State First Team are Fox, Jack Sargent (74.33), Jared Smith (74.45), and Brad Thornton (74.45), all of Gulf Coast; and Cameron Thomas of Northwest Mississippi (74.55).
The winner of the Region 23 Tournament and the next top individual finishers qualify for the NJCAA National Golf Tournament, which will be played May 20-25 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, IN.
