Billy Thornton, 76, of Hazlehurst, died Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Pine Crest Guest Home in Hazlehurst.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 2, from 5-7 p.m. with services at 7 at First Baptist Church. Tuesday, July 3, graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. at Shelton Cemetery.
Mr. Thornton was born in Mississippi on March 23, 1936, to Bob Jones and Cavie Lack Thornton.
He was a barber and restaurant business owner for over 50 years in Hazlehurst. He was a member of First Baptist Church Hazlehurst where he taught the Moses Sunday School class and was a deacon. Mr. Thornton was a youth baseball coach and umpire, an active Gideon, a member of American Legion, Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club. He was also a veteran with honorary discharge from the Army National Guard.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife, Bertha Faye Starnes Thornton.
Survivors include: sons, Billy Alvin Thornton and Bobby Charles Thornton; daughter, Donna Nell Thornton Little; five grandchildren, Mason A. Thornton, Clark W. Little, Emily L. Thornton, Virginia B. Little and Caroline M. Thornton and step-grandchildren, Brent Berry and Kate Berry; and four great-grandchildren.
