One shot, one in custody after weekend shooting
A man is in improving condition after suffering a single gun shot wound in Hazlehurst early Saturday morning.
Byron Swilley, Hazlehurst Police Chief, said that 23 year-old Fredericko Smith was wounded in the lower abdomen by a shot fired by 22 year-old female Ashley Barber, with whom Smith is believed to have a romantic relationship, around 1:00 a.m. Swilley said. Barber drove Smith to Hardy Wilson Memorial Hospital after the shooting. From there, Smith was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson, where he has undergone “several surgeries,” Swilley added.
“All we know is that his condition is improving, and he should be okay,” Swilley said.
The incident occurred at 205 Simmons Street. Barber, charged with aggravated assault domestic, is being held in Copiah County Detention Center in Gallman without bond pending her initial appearance in city court. Swilley said the motive of the dispute which led to the shooting is still being investigated.
