City: Old Glory deserves better

By Joe Buck Coates, Publisher

Someone has probably just overlooked it lately, but ever since Isaac blew through here at the end of August, the American flag flying over Hazlehurst City Hall is torn and tattered (above left photo.)  The time has come for a replacement.
According to American flag etiquette, “When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.”
The flag at right flies above the Copiah County Courthouse.  As one can see, care has been taken to display it properly and the flag itself has been well taken care of.  The one at left has been virtually ignored.  We hope it is just an oversight.
This is not a shot at city administration or grounds crews or any other city worker.  Hopefully, the attention drawn here will simply result in a solution: that the American flag at City Hall in Hazlehurst will be replaced.
We owe it to those who serve and have served our country in wars, especially to those who have died to defend it.  And, during these particular times of strife, where Old Glory is burned by overseas radical Muslims who hate us and want us dead, we owe it to our nation and our national consciousness.
