Trojans hammer Cobras 28-7

If ever a team needed an open date to regroup, refresh and refocus, it would be the 2012 Wesson Cobras, who fell got off to a blazing 3-0 start, but have dropped their last two games.  Last Friday night, a road trip to Foxworth, Miss., ended with a 28-7 loss to West Marion.
The Cobras’ only score came in the fourth period when RB Antonio Miller plunged over from two yards.  Koy McFarland, pressed into kicking duty when regular kicker Luis Mellado was injured last week, nailed the extra point.
Those two plays were just about the only highlights of the night for Cobras.  The Trojan defense held Wesson to negative-2 yards rushing and only 59 yards passing for a total of 57 yards.  “We were totally dominated by their defense and never established any offensive rhythm,” said head coach Ronald Greer on Monday.
West Marion, who competes in Region 8-3A, wasted no time in establishing what they had planned to do: dominate the Cobras.  In the first quarter, Trojan RB Vonnie Harrell plunged over from one yard and added the two-point conversion to give the home team an 8-0 lead.
The Trojans added three more TD’s in the second to lead 28-0 at the half.  Harrell scored on runs of 6 and 15 yards, while RB Cleve Lewis scampered in from the Cobra 4.
Wesson never threatened to score in the half.
The Cobra defense tightened up in the second half and held the Trojans scoreless the rest of the way, which is something that Greer believes his team can build on.
“I have confidence that our players will bounce back and play better in the weeks to come,” Greer explained.  His team is off next Friday before starting Region 6-2A play and hosting Amite County for homecoming on Friday, September 28, and the break may be what the doctor ordered.
“We have to get back to playing with more enthusiasm and improving on things that make us a better ball club,” Greer added.
