Howard Louis Green, Jr., 69, died Saturday, December 1, 2012, at The Baptist Home, Rhinebeck, NY. He had been ill for a number of years.
Mr. Green was born May 6, 1943, in Memphis, TN, to Howard L. Green, Sr. and Ora May Salter Green. He grew up in Hazlehurst, and graduated as class Valedictorian from Hazlehurst High School in 1961. After studying in the mathematics honors program at the University of Mississippi, he earned a BS in mathematics from Mississippi College in 1965. He did graduate studies at the University of North Carolina and at American University in Washington, DC.
He worked as a physics-mathematician for the Naval Weapons Laboratory in Dahlgren, VA. Upon receiving a medical retirement he returned to Hazlehurst, where he was active in church choir, men’s Bible study and other activities at First Baptist Church. For the last several years he was a resident at the Baptist Home in New York.
Howard loved to read, and had a zest for learning. He loved his church, family, and friends he met when able to take walks to town. He kept up with church friends, sharing concerns with family members.
He is survived by a sister, Nell R. (Green) Sanford (Bobby), brother, James E. Green (Angie); nieces Tricia S. Buchanan (Jeff), Christine G. Schwartz (Chris), Emily G. Watson (Tony), and Kimberly Green; one nephew, Jimmy Sanford; four great nephews, and a number of cousins, especially Martha Ellen Hughes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Student Ministry Fund of First Baptist Church, Hazlehurst, MS, or to a favorite charity.
