Wesson boys in good shape after first half of season

By Corey McKinney

The Cobras participated in the Dexter Christmas Tournament during the latter part of the week, winning two games and finishing in third place. Against the Sacred Heart Crusaders, the Cobras handled their own, winning big by a score of 73-26. A Cobra freshman, Anthony Jones, had 17 points in the win. Mack Smith added 14 points and 4 blocked shots. Terry Brown also had 11 points. Coach Rusty Newman said after the game, “Tonight we played real aggressive defense, which led to easy offense. It was good to get the win, and everyone contributed.”

In the second round of the tournament on Thursday, the Cobras took on South Pike. Coach Newman was looked forward to the task, as he was coaching at South Pike before coming to Wesson. Though the Cobras battled hard against the 4A school, the Eagles prevailed 74-72. Brown was doing all he could to get the win, dropping 21 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. Patrick Lumley also contributed very well for the Cobras, as he scored 15 points and 6 rebounds. Kaleb Skinner had a good game, scoring 9 points and dishing out 9 assists. Coach Newman said, “We played a bad first half and dug ourselves a hole. We fought back in the second half and tied the game up but just could not finish the comeback. I’m proud of my guys for not giving up.”

Wesson faced West Marion Trojans in the consolation contest on Friday. Wesson took care of business, pulling away in the second quarter to win 84-66. Skinner had an amazing game with 19 points and 6 assists. Farrod Green had a great game with his double-double, consisting of 18 points and 11 boards. Brown also had his usual big game with 18 points and 5 rebounds. “We played a lazy first quarter, but picked up our intensity in the second and took control of the game. I thought we played good team ball and had a really good game offensively”, says Coach Newman after the game.

The Wesson Cobras are now 11-6 with one half of the season behind them. Most of the second half’s games are Region 6-2A contests, so the Cobras will be focusing extra hard to win each. The next game for Wesson is at Bogue Chitto on January 4.
