Wolfpack bring home men’s state golf title

May takes medalist honors and Tucker Award
LAUREL – The Co-Lin Wolfpack won the 2013 MACJC State Championship today after firing rounds of 296-292 – 588 at Dixie Golf Club in Laurel.  Finishing second was East Mississippi at 592, followed by Northwest Mississippi at 594, Mississippi Gulf Coast at 599, Hinds at 616, and host Jones and East Central at 619.
Individually, Co-Lin’s Corbin May and Northwest Mississippi’s Chad Cupples were tied at 143. May birdied the fifth playoff hole to capture medalist honors. May also took home the Hubert Tucker Award for the lowest scoring average in the state for the year. He is Co-Lin’s first Hubert Tucker Award winner. May and teammate Alex Clark were named to the All-State First Team.  Joining the duo were Brad Thornton, Hayes Weathersby and Jake Pritchard, all of Mississippi Gulf Coast; and Caleb Westmoreland of East Mississippi.
“Today was fun, it was a grind,” said May. “I play a lot of junior golf with Chad so we’ve played playoffs together before. I’m excited to win state. I’m really proud of our team that means the most to me. Winning the Hubert Tucker Award was one of my goals this season.We still have to win the region and make it to Nationals.”
For the Wolfpack, Chad Arseneault fired a 72-72 – 145 (T5), Alex Clark finished at 75-71 – 146 (T7), Austin Schillaci shot 80-75 – 155 (T21) and Connor Barnes fired 79-77 – 156 (T24).
“The kids played good, they stepped it up when they needed to,” said Wolfpack head coach Ronny Ross. “Corbin and Alex are the top two golfers in the state. Austin, Chad, and Connor stepped in and played some really good golf. Hopefully we can go to Dancing Rabbit next week and win the Region Tournament and make it to Nationals.”
The Wolfpack won their last state championship in 2009.  Its the third state title, along with those won in football and women’s basketball, the Wolfpack have won this academic year.
Co-Lin, East Mississippi, Northwest Mississippi, Mississippi Gulf Coast and host East Central will compete in the NJCAA Region XXIII Golf Championship at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club (Azalea) on Monday and Tuesday, April 22-23.  The winner of that event will advance to the NJCAA National Championship held May 21-24 at Goose Pond Colony in Scottsboro, AL.
