June Lewis Thorne, 88, of Hazlehurst, died Thursday, September 26, 2013 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Visitation will be 12pm-2pm Saturday at First Presbyterian Church. Services will be 2pm Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with interment at Crystal Springs Cemetery. Stringer Family Funeral Home in Hazlehurst is handling arrangements.
Ms. Thorne was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served in many leadership roles. She was employed by Copiah Bank for 43 years retiring as Senior Vice President.
She leaves her close circle of friends with many wonderful memories and leaves behind her two beloved cats, Woody and Simie. Having been an avid golfer, she also loved gardening, cooking for friends, keeping up with all sports tournaments, dining out, and a “perfect” manhatten!
One of her particular joys was “Tootsie Valentine” that she shared with her longtime friend, Lillian Boteler. They began the exchange of the valentine in 1946 which continued throughout her life. A theatrical play was written and produced in 2005 that chronicled the lives of two friends – sad and joyous over six decades!! Her “Tootsie” friends remember her with the following quote: “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming, ‘Wow, What a Ride!’ ” (H. Thompson).
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Dr. S. W. “Jack” Thorne.
