Law enforcement investigating another murder

Copiah County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a murder that occurred near Hazlehurst this morning.
Derrick Cupit, Undersheriff of Copiah County, said that 35-year-old Derrick Williams, of Hazlehurst, was shot and killed by his cousin Larry Williams, 24, around 10:30 this morning on Bob Road west of Hazlehurst.
“We believe that the two were arguing over a woman, according to what witnesses told us.  The younger man shot him at close range with a weapon that has not been recovered yet,” Cupit said.
Larry Williams was not at the scene when deputies arrived, but turned himself in to authorities at the sheriff’s office in Gallman around 2 p.m.  He has been charged with murder, Cupit added.  Williams is being held at the detention center pending an initial appearance in justice court.  Cupit said the investigation will continue.
The shooting marks the second murder of 2013 in Copiah County.
