Operation Christmas Child collection dates set

SUPPORTING MISSION – Martha Swaney and Pat Schurbring are pictured with a poster for Operation Christmas Child. They are among many who work toward OCC each year. Copiah County has several churches involved in this mission field.

What do you get when you pair two ladies with a passion for spreading the gospel to children all around the world?  One hundred Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes, that’s what!

Since 1993, more than 100 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God’s love through the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child (OCC).  Samaritan’s Purse works with local churches and ministry partners to deliver the gifts and share the life-changing Good News of Jesus Christ.

Martha Swaney and Pat Schubring have been working together for the past six years and have contributed a large number of those boxes, 100 a year to be exact! Both had packed shoeboxes on their own for several years before they undertook this mission project as a team.  Pat started attending First Baptist Church in Crystal Springs and began attending Martha’s Sunday school class, and the rest, as they say, is history.  The two decided to join forces and set 100 boxes as their goal and that’s exactly what they’ve done for the past six years.

Martha says it’s a way to do for children that otherwise wouldn’t have anything. She attended Pigrims Rest Baptist Church last year and heard a Romanian girl named Luba speak.  Luba was in an orphanage years ago and received a shoebox.  She told of the difference that box made in her life.  Martha said after hearing her testimony it inspired her even more.  Martha said she gets so excited about packing the boxes each year and she and Pat shop all throughout the year getting ready. Pat is the bargain shopper, Martha says, and can find unbelievable deals at places like Hudson’s, Dirt Cheap, and the dollar stores.  Martha shops more for the “bigger ticket” items like toiletries she says. God has truly blessed them both through this ministry.
