Cherokee Rose Chapter, NSDAR, met November 20 at Covington Memorial Library and enjoyed a delightful slide presentation, “Mount Vernon, Yesterday and Today,” presented by Susan Reeder, Vice Regent for Mississippi of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association.
This organization is responsible for the purchase, restoration, and maintenance of George Washington’s home. Recognized as the first national preservation organization in America, the women who banded together in 1853 to form the Mount Vernon Ladies Association were embarking upon a single-minded mission – to protect George Washington’s home from commercial development. This was just the beginning of their endeavor which continues today, preserving this history for our country.
Several guests were welcomed, including members from Harmon Runnels Chapter in Monticello. Hostesses for the meeting were Joyce Long, Beth Conner, and Brenda Lewis.
