Special election ordered for Ward 1 Hazlehurst

Today Mississippi governor Phil Bryant has signed a Writ of Election to the Election Commissioners of the City of Hazlehurst that orders a new election for the seat of Ward 1 on the town’s Board of Alderman.

The order comes after Special Circuit Judge Billy J. Landrum, in the case of Jesse R. Larry (challenger) v. Frank Andre’ Jones (incumbent), vacated the results of the May 7, 2012 election on November 18, because so many violations of the Mississippi Election Code, irregularities and illegal votes occurred, “the will of the voters is impossible to discern.  Landrum heard testimony on June 4 in Copiah County Circuit Court.

The order says that the special election shall be held February 4, 2014, followed by a run-off between the two highest vote-getters if none receives over 50%-plus-one on February 25, 2014.  All candidates who qualified for the May 7 election in Ward 1 are now re-qualified for the February 4 election unless he or she wants to withdraw with a written notice to the City Clerk.
