Colonels hit a major speed bump, lose 4 in a row
By Corey McKinney
The past week for the Copiah basketball team hasn’t been the best week for the Colonels. The week started off hosting Jackson Prep on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Copiah started off on a roll, outscoring the Patriots 15-13 in the first quarter. The Colonels then hit a small shooting slump, only scoring 5 points in the second quarter as Jackson Prep would go on and score 11. Jackson Prep would hold a 24-20 lead at the half.
Both the Colonels and the Patriots came out of halftime on fire, but it was Jackson Prep who would hold a 6 point lead at the end of the third quarter. The final stanza had a major lack of offense. Copiah for the most part held Jackson Prep to only 2 points the whole quarter, but the Colonels had only scored six of their own. And as the final ticks fell off the clock, Jackson Prep would lay the ball up on a fast break to seal the win. The final score was 43-39.
There were only five Colonels who scored in the game against Jackson Prep. The leader was Dominic Gilbert with 15 points. Trey Moss had 13 points of his own. The other three scorers for Copiah were Justin Morris with 7 points, and both James Andrews and Zane Frazier with 2 points each.
Thursday, Jan. 23, there was a meeting held in Jackson about the foreign exchange student athletes for Copiah. The two seniors from Australia, James Andrews and Dominic Gilbert, were ruled ineligible by the AAC committee. The Colonels were forced to forfeit all games won up to that point, which currently put Copiah at 0-24. There will be an appeal Jan. 29.
The night of the ineligibility ruling, the Colonels would travel to East Rankin for the second match up against the Patriots. The Colonels, who were missing two starters, took control early, grasping a 17-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. These two teams continued to go basket for basket for the most part of the second quarter, with East Rankin outscoring the Colonels 16-14. Copiah would take a 31-28 lead at the half.
